SKY RANCH FOUNDATION℠ MARKS SIXTY YEARS OF SERVICE

June 2020

July 2020 marks the 60th year since the Sky Ranch Foundation was started.  In these six decades, and with great thanks to, and support from, the Beverage Alcohol Industry and other sources, the Foundation has awarded more than $3.6 million in grants, touching the lives of thousands of our nations’ at-risk youth to help them achieve a better life.

Originally, Sky Ranch Foundation’s ℠ SKY RANCH FOR BOYS® had been helping young people to rehabilitate their lives. Closed in 2011, SKY RANCH FOR BOYS® was a campus and working ranch located on the South Dakota/Montana border.  During its first 50 years, the Foundation membership focused on supporting the Ranch. In light of an economic trend toward community based alternatives, the Foundation leadership shifted its focus with a pledge to provide grants to quality programs delivering assistance to at-risk boys and girls, continuing the good work pioneered at SKY RANCH FOR BOYS®.  Since 2011, the list of organizations which have received funding from the Foundation has continued to grow (link here).

Sadly, due to Covid 19 and the present economic conditions the Foundation is not in a position to award any grants this year. We will continue to monitor the economic situation and should things improve the Foundation will make decisions to grant funds at a later date, based solely-upon the LOI’s already received at the end of February 2020.

SKY RANCH FOUNDATION℠ AWARDS GRANTS TO CHICAGO-BASED URBAN INITIATIVES AND SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES OF ILLINOIS

February 2020

Sky Ranch Foundation is fast approaching our sixth decade of assisting in the rehabilitation of at-risk youth. With contributions received from the Beverage Alcohol Industry, the Foundation reflects upon the many organizations which we have, in some small way, helped to achieve that goal.  To-date, more than $3.6 million has been awarded. At our most recent board meeting held in July 2019, these fine organizations received grants.

For more than 30 years, SOS Children’s Villages of Illinois (sosillinois.org) has provided safe, stable, loving homes to foster children in an individual home under the care of a full-time, professional Foster Parent. SOS Children’s Villages International, the parent organization, began in Europe in 1945, providing aid to children orphaned or abandoned during World War II.  Now with 3 Villages in Illinois, the most recent being Roosevelt Square, one more step awaits completion—the Roosevelt Square Village Community Center. Of note, SOS Children’s Villages was just awarded a four-star rating by Charity Navigator, the highest rating given to nonprofits.

Established in 2003, the Urban Initiatives (urbaninitiatives.org) approach is to empower Chicago’s at-risk youth to become community leaders through academic success, healthy living, and social-emotional learning by heightening the inherent power of sports and teamwork. Grants from Sky Ranch Foundation are directed to their Take the Lead program, now counting 200 youth in 40 schools, a 60% increase since the program began in 2014.

Peggy Donovan, Foundation Vice President, notes, “Both of these organizations have excelled beyond our expectations. Impressively, in just a few short years, each has substantially grown in the number of at-risk youth served in the greater Chicago area.  We congratulate them and thank them for their service to this community. ”

January 2020

It’s a new year and Sky Ranch Foundation℠ is fast approaching our sixth decade of assisting in the rehabilitation of at-risk youth. To-date, more than $3.6 million has been awarded. At our most recent board meeting held in July 2019, Sacred received a grant.

Overland Park, Kansas-based Sacred’s (kidsaresacred.org) mission is to eradicate the financial fear and stress that a family may feel when a loss of income is caused by child sexual abuse. Since the beginning of 2019 sacred has grown from serving three states to nine including Missouri, Kansas, New York, Texas, Maryland, North Carolina, Connecticut, Arizona and Tennessee. Sacred has impacted 55 families and163 children in 2019 and both continue to grow.

John D’Attoma, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and Carol D’Attoma, President and Executive Director of Sacred

SKY RANCH FOUNDATION℠ AWARDS GRANT TO CHRIST CHILD HOUSE

November 2019

On behalf of the Beverage Alcohol Industry, Sky Ranch Foundation has awarded more than $300,000 in grants this year to several organizations which help rehabilitate our nation’s at-risk youth. The Beverage Alcohol Industry’s contributions have helped the Foundation to award grants to worthy organizations such as Detroit, MI-based Christ Child House (christchildhouse.org).

‘CCH’ is an intensive residential treatment center licensed by the State of Michigan that has provided care for up to 31 boys, ages 5 through 16, since 1948. It has been owned and operated by the Detroit Chapter of the Christ Child Society, a charitable, non-profit organization of volunteers who have been helping disadvantaged youth throughout Michigan for more than 100 years.  The philosophy of Christ Child House — “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood”

Foundation Chairman George McCarthy states, “These children have sustained all types of abuse and neglect. Most arrive suffering from severe trauma. We have the deepest respect for this organization for their dedication and service to these youth in the Greater Detroit community.”

SKY RANCH FOUNDATION℠ AWARDS GRANT TO THE ORANGE DUFFEL BAG INITIATIVE

September 2019

On behalf of the Beverage Alcohol Industry, Sky Ranch Foundation has awarded a total of more than $300,000 in grants this year to several organizations which help rehabilitate our nation’s at-risk youth. The Beverage Alcohol Industry’s contributions have helped the Foundation to award grants to worthy organizations such as Atlanta, Georgia- based The Orange Duffel Bag Initiative (theodbi.org).

Approaching a decade (February 2010) of caring, The ODBI provides at-risk teens and young adults programs proven to improve their education success, ongoing advocacy, support to their guardians and caring adults, and service to the community in a spirit of offering hope and positive systemic change. Why an orange duffel bag? When ODBI co-founder Sam Bracken was a homeless teen in Nevada, he received a full-ride football scholarship to GA Tech. He packed all he owned and all his hopes and dreams in an orange duffel bag, and his life was forever changed for the better by Coach Bill Curry, Dr. Homer Rice, and Georgia Tech’s Total Person Program. Bracken credits his success to education and caring adults.

Recently the organization hosted their annual charity golf event which was attended by Foundation President Ralph Aguera.  “I have seen the passion this organizations’ staff applies to their work and have witnessed the enthusiasm in these troubled youths’ faces. The ODBI is an exemplary organization,” says Ralph Aguera.

SKY RANCH FOUNDATION℠ AWARDS GRANTS TO WEST HAWAIIAN MEDIATION CENTER AND PATH NORTH DAKOTA

June 2019

Closing in on six decades, Sky Ranch Foundation continues to support our nation’s at-risk youth. The Beverage Alcohol Industry’s contributions have helped the Foundation to award grants to organizations such as those below.

Kamuela, HI-based West Hawaii Mediation Center (whmediation.org) has been serving the mediation needs of the West Hawaii community for over 25 years, providing community-based mediation for both self-referred and court/legal system referred cases. Focusing on school age children, their ‘peer mediation’ is both a program and a process where students of the same age group facilitate resolving disputes between two of their peers. The mediation process allows students to become actively involved in transforming the school climate by becoming agents of change.

Foundation President Ralph Aguera states, “The West Hawaiian Mediation Center underscores the importance of reaching at-risk youth during the earliest stages of their development, a key process toward promoting positive behavior.”

For more than 15 years, Bismark, ND-based Path North Dakota (pathinc.org) offers foster care, adoption, in-home and community-based family services in North Dakota and Idaho. More than 400 families have provided Foster care to more than 1,400+ children through this organization’s efforts. “On any given day, there are nearly 443,000 children in foster care in the United States. In 2017, more than 690,000 children spent time in U.S. foster care,” notes Foundation Chairman George McCarthy. “With their additional services, this organization further helps to ensure that these children lead productive lives.”
